As an eco-friendly construction company, we do our best to limit the use of concrete in our landscapes by relying on the material primarily for structural support of steps and fence posts. With the exception of concrete, we are happy to construct pathways and patios using just about any material. Whether we are using flagstone, pavers, or decomposed granite, our priority is to install a permeable paving system that allows water to infiltrate and move slowly through the landscape instead of rapidly conveying it into our storm drains.
Traditional lawns are unsustainable from both a maintenance and water-use perspective. There are appropriate places for sod, like sports fields and children's play areas, but for most residential applications we are better off replacing traditional sod with a drought-tolerant groundcover or planting area. Let's ditch the lawn mowers and high water bills for something better adapted to our California climate.
